Interpreting accurately requires more than transferring words or signs from one language to another. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the distinction between linguistic correspondence and conceptual accuracy and examine how meaning is shaped by context, pragmatics, register, cultural and discourse information, and other communicative cues. Through discussion, examples, and application activities, participants will analyze how interpreters determine the meaning they are attempting to represent and consider how target-language choices can preserve, omit, add, or change elements of the source message. Particular attention will be given to moving beyond habitual one-to-one interpretations while avoiding unsupported assumptions about speaker intent. Participants will leave with a practical framework for making and justifying interpreting decisions based on evidence available in the source message and communicative context.
